Downsizing isn’t just about moving into a smaller space — it’s about simplifying life, creating breathing room, and making space for what truly matters next. Recently, I had the privilege of assisting a longtime homeowner who was ready to begin that next chapter.
Step 1: Sorting, Simplifying, and Letting Go
The first step was helping her sort through decades of memories. Together with her dauthers, she created a clear plan — what to keep, what to gift to family, what to donate, and what to sell. To make the process smooth and stress-free, I referred one of my vetted estate sale partners, a trusted company that specializes in respectful, well-organized downsizing sales. They help the family decide what would be best told through an estate sale and the famiy decided everything else would be sold through a garage sale.
Step 2: Hosting a Successful Garage Sale
For the smaller items she wanted to sell herself, I helped her and her famiy plan and advertise a neighborhood garage sale. We discussed timing, signage, social media posts. Helping them out by handling the social media marketing took the stress of learning something new off their plate.
Step 3: Preparing the Home for Market
Once the home is emptied, it will be time for a professional eye. Together, we will walked through the property and assessed what updates would create the best return on investment.
